Okay, that is good news, but I cannot help but completely agree with this comment a reader made on the New York Times website:

“What a joke! The Confederate flag, hanging at the State House in SC, is a straw man that is diverting attention from where it should be. Smart Republican ploy that the Democrats tripped into without thinking. Gun control, voting rights, incarceration rates of African Americans – those are more hateful signs of racism than the little flag hanging in Charlston. Those are the issues candidates should be talking about.”

If we celebrate this political maneuver too much, we’re in serious danger of blocking out the bigger issues across the U.S. and particularly concentrated in a state like South Carolina.
